Dr. Sumeet Pawar
Department of Neuro-Surgery
MBBS, DNB Neurosurgery, MBA, F. MASS (Japan), F. ESS (Taiwan)

Profile

Dr Sumeet Pawar did his MBBS from G S Medical College & KEM Hospital in 2008, followed by board certified Neurosurgery program from Lilavati Hospital and Research Centre, Mumbai to be conferred Diplomate of National Board in Neurosurgery from NBE, New Delhi.

He is passionately interested in the art of spine surgery since his training and has been able to assist and perform more than 1800 surgeries in Spine during training. He is proficient in successfully performing all kinds of advanced spine surgeries including anterior cervical surgery, lumbar decompression, dynamic stabilisation, PLIF, TLIF, kyphoplasty, etc.

Having trained in spine, he pursued his interest in minimal access surgery in Southern Tohuku University in Japan and then Lohas Spine Hospital, Taiwan. There he learnt the nuances of doing spine surgery through small incision, without general anesthesia, same day disahrge while achieving similar results with better patient comfort.

He is a specialist in endoscopic and minimal access spine surgery using Destandau Endospine system, tubular system, transforaminal endoscopic (PELD) and Percutaneous Stenoscopic System (PSLD). He is also doing all instrumentation and fixation of spine with MISS techniques including ACDF, TLIF, PLIF, Percut pedicle screws, percutaneous kyphoplasty etc. He does open surgery also for tumors, infections and scoliosis correction.

Over time, he has world largest and India's first series in endoscopic detethering surgery. He has achieved expertise in doing PELD under local anesthesia and recently started doing fusion surgery under local anesthesia. This permits patients to be discharged the same day after surgery. With an experience of more than 2300 cases, he is one of the only neurosurgeons in Mumbai pursuing fully endoscopic systems and currently operates PELD, PSLD (awake spine procedures) using German Maxmore and Joimax instruments exclusively at Lilavati Hospital.

Having keen interest in scientific research and innovations in the surgical field, he has many research publications in national and international medical journals and authored many chapters in neurosurgical books. He is currently Editor in Chief of Journal of Spinal Surgery, one of the highest rated journals in Spine in India.
